Yesterday screenwriter Mike Sweeney went on a mini-tweetstorm which offered some sound advice for all writers. Reprinted by permission.
Mike knows of what he speaks because the script he co-wrote with his writing partner Nick Creature — “The Mayor of Shark City” — made the 2013 Black List.
Takeaway: Be more than a Black List writer. Be someone who can deliver on a deadline, execute notes, solve problems, work well with colleagues. Develop the skills that will make you a WORKING writer not just a recognized one.
I doubt there’s a Hollywood writer who has made any list or won any award who would disagree with this sentiment.
Focus on the work and honing your craft.
