“Because it’s not about a new year, it’s about a new attitude.”

Twitter can be a gold mine for writers. Case in point, when pro writers generate a tweetstorm about the craft. For example on New Year’s Eve, my friend Joshua James (@writerjoshjames) retweeted a thread by another writer Paul Guyot (@fizzhogg). I thought Paul’s observations deserved to be seen by a wider audience and archived here so the thread didn’t just vanish down Twitter’s sucking sinkhole of activity. So I reached out to Paul who gave me permission to post his tweetstorm here.

Paul Guyot

I love Paul’s honesty. Working as a writer in the film and TV business is a total head trip. You’re up. You’re down. As Paul says, projects can go South… Just. Like. That. To experience that can lead a writer down a seriously debilitating path.

You can let IT control YOU. Or YOU control IT. How to do the latter? As Paul suggests: Write.

And take care of yourself. Make plans. Not goals. Plans.

Do the work… because you love it.

Think of it not so much as a means to an end… to be successful.

Rather, look at writing as your PURPOSE.

As Paul says: “…you are better than you think you are. And you can do more than you think you can. If you want something you’ve never had you must be willing to do things you’ve never done.”

Well said, Paul. Thanks for your observations and insights.
