Update: Time to Read 2017 Movie Scripts

One of the best ways to learn the craft: Read scripts!

Jimmy Stewart reading a script and breaking it down.

So far this year, we’ve had a great run of analyzing 2017 movie scripts including these:

The Big Sick
Coco
Get Out
I, Tonya
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

I strongly encourage you to read through each of these series of posts and the responses from GITS readers. There are some excellent insights.

The jumping off point for our week-long discussions is a scene-by-scene breakdown. So far, over 60 people have volunteered to read a movie script and break it down. This is a terrific way to see the structure of the story. You can see all of those scene-by-scene breakdowns here.

We could use more volunteers. Here are 2017 movie scripts which are still available for download and good candidates for analysis.

Battle of the Sexes (Fox Searchlight)
Beauty and the Beast (Disney)
Darkest Hour (Focus Features)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Disney)
Thor: Ragnarok (Disney)
War for the Planet of the Apes (Twentieth Century Fox)

If you’re up for doing a scene-by-scene breakdown, please let me know.

Our next script read and analysis is Mudbound, set to begin on Monday, March 26. You can download the script here. The movie is on Netflix.
