Video interview: Francis Ford Coppola
“Real success only involves two people: yourself and yourself.” The money quote from this choice 1975 NBC feature on writer-director Francis Ford Coppola. The news piece takes place just after the success of The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II has made Coppola a wealthy man and now setting out to create American Zoetrope studios in San Francisco. Much of the focus of the piece is on “City” magazine, which Coppola launched at great expense, only to see it flounder and die in 1976. There’s a nifty moment in the piece where Coppola is ushering prospective investors to his new studio digs and he can be heard talking about his new project “The Heart of Darkness,” which became, of course, Apocalypse Now (1979).
