Whither Geoff Boucher and the “Hero Complex”?

Way back on September 5, 2008, I posted this: “The Superman problem: Can he still fly in the 21st century?”. It was the first time I had stumbled across a new blog at the Los Angeles Times called “Hero Complex,” hosted by Geoff Boucher.

Over the years, I posted numerous HC articles, a go-to site for all things fanboy, Comic-Con, and superhero.

In the last week or so, news emerged that Boucher would be leaving the LAT.

That bummed me out.

But Anne Thompson at Indiewire posted the first article I’ve seen to give some indication of what went down and what’s going to happen to “Hero Complex,” including some quotes from Boucher himself:

“The way it happened is not the way I had planned,” Boucher admits. “I had an exchange with John Corrigan that changed my plan. I was going to sit tight until the creditors took over and see what happened and take ‘Hero Complex’ with me. But I had worked with so many good people for so long that I was not willing to work for a bad person. I’m a team player.”

Boucher had created a very cool brand with “Hero Complex.” Thompson’s article notes the blog generated 50M pages views per year. While the Times retains rights to the name, Boucher is a free agent. I’m sure he will land somewhere great and fans of his work, myself included, look forward to following him wherever he ends up.
