Who’s up to rewrite their script in January?

In November, upward to 1,000 writers — myself included — took a crack at pounding out a script as part of the Zero Draft Thirty Challenge. Many of us reached FADE OUT / THE END.

Now comes the hard part: Rewrites. So I thought why not use the same approach we did with the Zero Draft Thirty Challenge?

Which has led us to this: ReWrite Draft Thirty One. Twitter hashtag: #RW31SCRIPT. Or maybe we should just call it Re-Write-O-Rama.

Starting Monday, I’ll invite people to give their script, whether it’s a zero draft, 2nd draft, 5th draft, or 10th draft, a clean read. Then do like I’m going to do: Spend the next 18 days figuring out what works in the story, what doesn’t work, and prep for the rewrite.

On January 1 — hangover or not — we start rewriting our scripts. 31 days. FADE IN to FADE OUT. Just like we did with the ZD30 Challenge, I’ll do daily blog posts and ask writers to share their experiences here at Go Into The Story, on Twitter, and at the Zero Draft Thirty Facebook page.

If you plan on joining me for Re-Write-O-Rama — or even if you don’t — I encourage you to join the Facebook group. Currently 430 members strong, it’s a great group.

In advance of the #RW31SCRIPT Challenge, I’ve been running a blog series on rewrite strategies. As noted, just as there is no right way to write, there’s no right way to rewrite. I offer these posts as a way to approach the rewrite process. If anything resonates with you, great. If not, no worries.

Here are links to the first 5 parts of the rewrite series:

Part 1: Set It Aside

Part 2: A Clean Read

Part 3: Characters

Part 4: Themes

Part 5: Structure

Look for Parts 6–10 starting tomorrow. But also get ready to give your draft a clean read and assess what works and what doesn’t.
