Why are the studios NOT making more movies for the largest demo groups?

Check out this graphic from Nielsen:

If you total three age groups, 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, that is represents 52% of the moviegoing audience in 2012. Let’s call these Adults.

Compare to 30% comprised of 12–17 and 18–24 groups. Let’s call these Young Adults.

So why do a majority of movies produced by Hollywood studios target Young Adults, representing just 30% of the market, compared to Adults, which makes up 52%?

The numbers become even more stark if you add the 55–64 group (12%) to the Adult category, bringing the total to 64%. That is more than double the size of the Young Adult groups.

I’m sure the studios have their reasons. Merchandising. Young Adults more likely to come out opening weekends when studios make a higher percentage split with exhibitors off box office revenues. Young Adults more likely to be repeat customers.

Still 64% vs. 30%. Which raises the question: Why are the studios not making more movies for the largest demo groups?

Something to discuss this July 4th holiday weekend.
