Sometimes it’s important to remember what this site is about.

We honor screenwriters.
We promote good screenwriting practices.
We want to see better movies made based on great stories.

The site is not about me. It’s about the craft.

I don’t post items to generate controversy and loads of comments.
Rather day after day, post after post, I focus on content and resources.

Ideas. Insights. Inspiration.

This path, trying to break into and succeed as a writer in Hollywood… it is a tough road to hoe.
The odds are definitely stacked against any writer, professional or aspiring.

We have to be honest about that.

And the fact is there is no right way to write.
There are no secret formulas.
No golden paradigms.

Developing your voice as a writer, that is a process you do on your own.

I see it as my responsibility to present to you as many ideas — hopefully good ideas — as possible.

Who knows if you might respond to this take or that.
Who knows if one particular post could inform, even galvanize your writing approach.
Who knows what opportunities presented on this blog inspire you to write.

Next Monday, we start Go On Your Own Quest in earnest.

After eight weeks of reflecting on writing theory, we move into prep-writing.

I have pounded this point over and over and over again. Most professional screenwriters and TV writers break their story in prep.

You have the opportunity to do that starting next Monday.

So overcome the voices of negativity. Cynicism. Bitterness. Self-doubt.
And seize this chance.

If you think you have a great story concept, now is the time to write it.

Monday, September 9: You can Go On Your Own Quest and start prepping your story.

6 weeks.
Then move into 10 weeks of pounding out your first draft.
And you can do that sharing your experience with other GITS readers, your own virtual writers group.

My friends, just go for it.

I would love nothing more than to see your script make the Black List. Great stories await you… but not unless you commit to create them.

NOTE: I originally posted this last year on September 7, 2012. This year, we have something even better: The Black Board. A free online community very much in the same spirit and atmosphere as what you find emanating from this blog. What Shaula Evans has helped to create there, along with an amazing group of moderators, is nothing short of remarkable. So check out the Go On Your Own Quest forum. You can go on this journey with like-minded souls and fellow writers.
