Writing Question: What do you do when you’ve had a crap day for writing?
Your characters ignored you. Or flat-out ran away from you. Maybe they called you names. Or talked behind your back.
That scene you thought was so great when you first came up with it? You tried writing it today from twelve different angles. All horrible, each worse than the other. Flaccid, funky, flat and effed up.
You stared at the computer monitor for painful minutes in mute silence, fingers frozen atop your keyboard, afraid you might generate even worse spewage than you already had.
Oh, and The Voices In Your Head had a field day.
“Whose head did you put a gun to and force them to say, ‘Hey, you’re a writer?’”
“Oh, that’s a good line of dialogue… if you were a mutated robot with the emotional depth of a broken bong and the talent of a mud worm.”
“Hahahaha,hoo-hoo. That’s sure a funny scene. Too bad you’re writing a DRAMA!”
Every. Word. You. Typed. Sucked.
In other words, it was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad writing day.
What do you do? How do you handle that? Have you developed some coping skills to make it through the night and come back the next day to try again?
It’s therapy time at GITS. Dare to share your darkest moments as a writer and how you survive them.
