UPDATE: For any of you who have been averaging about 4 pages per day, this is just about the point in the first draft process — between 40–45 — where things can start to go pear-shaped. If you don’t know the story’s ending and you haven’t figured out Act Two, you may be feeling a little to a lot lost. And that’s when VON (Voices Of Negativity) can go into warp drive to undermine your progress.
“You don’t even know where the hell you’re going. Think of all the bad story choices you can make. You’ll be writing and rewriting forever. What’s the point? Why not quit, take a break, then work on that other story idea you have. Think of how good you’ll feel not having to worry about this story.”
And so on. Even one setback can set off self-doubt. Which is why I chose this graphic from Anita Brandt Burgoyne for today’s post:
Setbacks are never permanent unless we let them be. Instead they are temporary and we can always get past them with persistence and work. And if you’re embracing the Zero Draft mindset, even if you hit a story roadblock, give it your best shot and MOVE ON. This draft will not be perfect. That should free you up to keep progressing toward FADE OUT.
