Today’s Writing Quote
I reached out to several screenwriters whose scripts have been selected for the annual Black List, asking them this: What do you focus on when writing a first draft? Here are some thoughts from Geoff LaTulippe (2008 Black List):
“The only two things I care about in a first draft are 1) making sure I’m satisfied that I’ve said what I’ve wanted to say and that 2) I’ve created something capable of captivating the reader. That’s it. And that’s the great thing about true first passes — you have the freedom to vomit out everything you’ve got and then edit, reshape and focus as you go through subsequent drafts. I prefer to let the story come to me however it comes to me and worry about the structure later. The structure can always be developed if the story is gripping. So I make sure the story grips. Simple as that.”

UPDATE: The buzz continues with lots of great comments and conversation, both on Twitter and here on the blog. One of the reasons I’m pushing blog comments is I can archive these posts, so whatever resources, inspirational quotes, and the like become part of an ongoing resource for future writers. Therefore keep ’em comin’!
Time for today’s The Trumbo Award which goes to Steve Fabian who left this comment:
My apartment is on the NYC Marathon route. All day today runners were going by my window. Some were running at a good pace, others were going slowly or walking, but each was determined to keep moving forward to achieve a major goal.
If you haven’t ever been to a marathon, the cool thing is that all along the street are tons of people cheering on the runners. I went out for a few minutes to clap. The energy made me even more excited to go back upstairs and write. It was a great inspiration to sit and type while this was happening.
And it’s a great parallel with Zero Draft Thirty. We are both the runners and the supporters. See you all at the finish line!
Well said, Steve. Would that each of us can look back at our work at the end of November and recall the Biblical verse: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
