2014 Spec Script Deal List
Around this time every year since I launched the blog in 2008, I do a week-long analysis of the recent year in terms of spec script deals. This week, we look back at 2014.
A few things up front.
First, my usual caveat: Tracking spec script deals is not an exact science. To make the blog’s list, there almost always has to be some sort of article in the press verifying a deal, but even then that can get dicey because the term “spec script” is itself rather amorphous in meaning.
In the broadest terms, it applies to any deal made for a script written ‘speculatively,’ that is for no fees, just the writer’s own sweat equity with the hope of making a sale. Seems simple enough, but there is a lot of gray area:
* Some deals get announced that are in effect handshake, no money arrangements.
* Some deals are by professional writers with a preexisting relationship with a production group or studio, so that a tacit agreement was in place for the project from the get-go, even if nothing official until the script comes in.
* Some deals are scripts that have been circulating for many months, even years in the process of being packaged, then finally get announced when the project receives a green light.
* Some deals are option arrangements for as little as $5–10K, not what we typically associate with spec script sales (i.e., six figures).
As I say, not an exact science. Which leads me to the second point: I am changing terms. I used to call these transactions as spec script “sales”. From here on out, I will refer to them as spec script “deals”. Why?
While laypeople may think of a ‘sale’ as being any transaction in which money exchanges hands, in Hollywood with re spec scripts, a sale translates into the outright purchase of the script, its IP and underlying rights. That is distinct from an ‘option’ which only secures rights to the script for a certain amount of time.
In the past, I used the term ‘sale’ as a blanket description of any deal because there just wasn’t any information available through the press distinguishing between sales and options. Since there has been a decline in spec script sales and an increase in spec script options, that information has been bubbling up to the surface more frequently.
But here’s the real reason for the change: I want to try to give as accurate a sense of how the spec market is doing as possible. Frankly, I am suspicious of online outfits who do not draw distinctions between sales and options, and report a higher number of transactions than I typically do. It concerns me that they may be padding the numbers to give aspiring writers the impression the spec market is booming, better to promote and sell their services (e.g., consultations, script coverage, contests).
And that brings up the third prefatory comment: The spec market softened considerably in 2014. That is the unvarnished truth, confirmed both through the numbers you will see in this post and through multiple conversations with managers and writers.
Are the numbers in 2014 a blip? A trend away from a strong three year period between 2011–2013? That’s a subject we will be discussing this week.
I should note, over the past few years, when I have posted a spec script transaction, I have been noting if the deal was an option in contrast to a sale as I could confirm the details. Again, the shift from spec script ‘sale’ to ‘deal’ as an overall form of categorization is be as accurate as possible about the state of the spec market.

The pseudo-paradise has an anything goes policy since the memories of the androids reset every night. One female staffer, however, suffers a glitch and is flooded with all her memories. Realizing the horror she has been made to suffer, she vows revenge. Title: Mena Logline: The spec is a fact-based tale about Barry Seal, a portly pilot who, in the 1980s, was a 300-pound gun runner, and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and the Medellin cartel. He was eventually shot to death by the latter in Baton Rouge. The title refers to Mena, Arkansas, where a lot of the illegal activity took place, under the noses of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Footage of Lam’s bizarre, inexplicable behavior in an elevator before her death became a massive Internet sensation, and this has been turned into the story of the man investigating her death, and the nightmare he stumbles into.
