2011 Report Card [The Wrap]: 20th Century Fox
Every year, The Wrap does a ‘report card’ on the box office performance of all the major Hollywood studios. Today: 20th Century Fox.
Grade: C
Twentieth Century Fox successfully rebooted two franchises, “Planet of the Apes” and “X-Men,” and built an animated series with “Rio.” But the studio — now in last place in market share — is not taking chances. A low-risk slate and tight-fisted culture is killing Fox’s upside.
Evidently 20th Century Fox has had a change of heart, at least in terms of script acquisitions, for after pretty much sitting on the sidelines for the last few years, they are back as buyers: By my count, 7 spec script purchases this year.
