2011 Report Card [The Wrap]: Warner Bros.

Every year, The Wrap does a ‘report card’ on the box office performance of all the major Hollywood studios. Today: Warner Bros.

Grade: B

It’s tough to criticize a year that included a $1.33 billion global box-office performance by the final “Harry Potter” movie, not to mention a $581.5 million worldwide gross by an R-rated comedy, “The Hangover Part II.” But Warner’s inability to turn “Green Lantern” into a much-needed new multi-hit franchise impacted its grade.

Now that the Harry Potter franchise has run its course [until they do the inevitable remakes in a decade or less], Green Lantern had a weak start, and Christopher Nolan is rounding out his commitment to the Batman series, it’s interesting to see how Warner Bros. is responding. One notable fact: They have nearly doubled the number of spec scripts they bought this year over the annual total of the last three years, many of them franchise-type projects. Clearly an attempt to restock the coffers with tentpole titles.
