A few points about GITS
At the beginning of October, I had intended to do a welcome post. Haven’t done one for awhile and I know there are many new GITS readers, so it’s a good thing to bring people up to speed with some of the key operating principles of the blog as well as some of its features.
But I got too damn busy and didn’t get to it. Next month then!
However in the context of a discussion in one of the comment threads today, I found myself posting at least some of that key GITS info, so I figured I’d go ahead and pass it along again here.
Here are a few things I happen to believe and thus act on in my writing on GITS:
* There is no right way to write. Every writer is different, every story is different.
* There is no secret formula for writing a successful screenplay.
* Stories are organic and we as writers are best served by engaging them in an I-You relationship, not diminishing them by forcing them into a formula.
* No one needs to read any screenwriting books, listen to any screenwriting gurus, take any screenwriting courses, or pay heed to anyone about the craft, myself included. The truth is a writer can learn all they need to know about screenwriting by doing three things: Read scripts. Watch movies. Write pages.
Obviously I have my own ideas on the craft and I’m happy to share them here. If you find any of them helpful, great. If not, feel free to reject them.
Likewise when I talk about Hollywood and the movie business, I’m giving my two cents on the subject. I’m not an A list writer, never was, and don’t claim to be the world’s greatest authority on The Biz. Just providing my take. Again, helpful? Great. If not? The virtual recycling bin is located to your right.
One last thing: We are developing a truly remarkable community here, most notably in terms of the commentary that goes on in response to posts. Some really, really smart people frequent this site and are thoughtful enough to compose and share their thoughts. There’s an enormous amount of learning about the craft that can happen simply by reading through those threads as they happen.
Therefore allow me to take this opportunity to thank you for frequenting this site. And for those of you who prefer to just read posts and commentary, that’s completely fine. However you’re most comfortable.
