Another contained thriller

Earlier this week, per THR:

Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson have been cast in the suspense film “The Ledge” from first-time writer-director Matthew Chapman.

The actors join Terrence Howard and Charlie Hunnam in the story of a man (Hunnam) standing on a high-rise ledge who insists he must jump by noon as the policeman below (Howard) tries to manage the situation.

“ ‘The Ledge’ examines the different and sometimes dangerous beliefs people adopt as a means of surviving emotional trauma,” Chapman said.

And this observation from one of the movie’s producers:

“As more and more films succumb to the visual wizardry of 3D, ‘The Ledge’ explores the fourth dimension: the interior life of tortured souls hovering over the precipice of emotional nullity. This film is the reason why I became an independent filmmaker and why I continue to suffer in the trenches of independent filmmaking.”

Despite the tilt toward hyperbole, the point about movies that delve into a character’s “interior life” resonates. Yes, Up in the Air stars George Clooney, but his good looks and charm alone couldn’t drive that movie to $155M box office worldwide. It’s interesting movie that goes into the interior lives of three primary characters and touches on the emotional pain of being fired in a dozen or more bit characters.

Circling back to the main point, the contained thriller story type seems to be a strong niche just now in Hwood.
