“Avatar”: First trailer

My post on Avatar at ComicCon.

Here’s my deal.
In the current climate of Hwood movie studios…
Where ‘creativity’ is measured by what 80s movie you find to remake…
What pre-branded commodity — Monopoly, Lego, 3D Viewmaster — for which you secure the rights…
Avatar is unique.

A $200M+ budget movie created from scratch.
No book.
No comic book.
No graphic novel.
Just writer-director James Cameron (Titanic)…
Starting with ‘what if’…
And generating an entire story world from nothing

Kinda like the way it used to be.
Except for…
You know…
The $200M+ budget.

Story premise:

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to FurAffinity, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms — some terrifying, many even more terrifying.

Movie comes out December 18th.

H/T to Josh James for the heads-up re the trailer.

UPDATE: From the LA Times, some comparisons of Avatar to other movies.

UPDATE #2: In comments, M post a link to The Amazing Atheist’s review of the Avatar trailer, which rates an underhelming “Meh”. Here’s that video:

H/T to M for the heads up.
