Billy Mernit: “Light and Shadow”

So last Sunday was Ingmar Bergman day here at GITS:

* The Daily Dialogue was from Smiles of a Summer Night

* The video interview was an hour-long interview with Bergman himself

* A post featuring a BBC4 documentary on Bergman

* And finally a Woody Allen interview about his cinematic hero Bergman

Then I get a heads-up from writer, story analyst, consultant, and “Living the Romantic Comedy” blogger Billy Mernit to check out this post on his blog honoring the late, great cinematographer Sven Nykvist:

Ingmar Bergman: Most of all I miss working with Sven Nykvist, perhaps because we are both utterly captivated by the problems of light, the gentle, dangerous, dreamlike, living, dead, clear, misty, hot, violent, bare, sudden, dark, springlike, falling, straight, slanting, sensual, subdued, limited, poisonous, calming, pale light. Light.

And then this from Nykvist himself:

“A motion picture doesn’t have to look

absolutely realistic,” Nykvist says. “It can be

beautiful and realistic at the same time. I am

not interested in beautiful photography. I am

interested in telling stories about human

beings, how they act and why they act that

way.”
