Christmas box office record

According to The Wrap:

Expecting a nice surprise under their tree this year, studio distributors instead got the equivalent of a luxury car with a giant bow on it Friday, as the domestic box-office shattered last year’s Christmas Day record with an enormous $85 million haul.

In trumping the $75 million record set last Christmas, both “Avatar” and “Sherlock Holmes” came up huge. Fox’s James Cameron-directed 3D epic took in $23.3 million Friday, according to studio estimates, and is being tracked to actually grow 7 percent from its premiere weekend with a $82 million three-day total. “Avatar” could have as much as $220 million in its domestic coffers once the weekend is over.

Per THR:

“Sherlock Holmes” unwrapped the biggest present at the boxoffice Christmas Day, kicking off what’s shaping up as a hectic and crowded weekend at the muliplex.

Attracting an estimated $24.9 million for its opening day, Warners Bros.’ “Sherlock Holmes,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, led the pack.

The PG-13 rated movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, bowed in 3,626 locations. Entering its eighth day of release Fox’s “ Avatar” was close behind. The 3D space tale pulled in another $23.6 million as it easily crossed the $150 million mark.

I’m a huge Sherlock Holmes fan and approach this movie with much trepidation — turning Holmes into an action hero (pugilist no less!) has me grinding my teeth. Interested in anybody’s reaction who’s seen it.
