Congratulations, Jeff Messerman!

Talk about good karma! Long-time GITS follower Jeff Messerman, who on his own initiative started and moderates The GITS Club, our peer review site, recently received some great news:

I got not one, but two writer-for-hire jobs… Been cultivating this one for a long time. First one will go into production in April. And it’s a project I’m passionate about and it seems that the filmmakers involved “see” my vision, which is very gratifying.

The producer asked me this morning if I had anything else laying around on my hard drive… I pitched him a “Scenes from a Marriage”-ish comedy I’ve been toiling on for some time… he wanted it before I finished my third sentence.

I know it’s easy to become cynical in this business. But those of you who have been around this blog since the beginning know about Jeff and what a quality person he is. At one point, he was so discouraged about the writing ‘game,’ he posted something basically saying that was it for him; in the future, he’d drop by GITS every now and then, but he figured a writing career just wasn’t in the cards for him.

And now this.

When I lived and worked in LA, I would often run into other screenwriters. And when they’d say they were struggling and hadn’t landed a gig in several months, I couldn’t help but share their suffering — because I knew first-hand what that was like. But when they’d be all pumped about a new writing assignment or selling a pitch or heaven forbid, their movie just got greenlit, I would feel nothing but joy for them… just like I feel now for Jeff.

It’s a hard business. So it’s important to celebrate the good times.

Why not drop in on comments and give your best wishes to one of our own. Hopefully next time, we’ll be celebrating on your behalf.

Congratulations, Jeff!

P.S. Some news re The GITS Club tomorrow.
