Daily Dialogue — April 18, 2011
Withnail: Why has my head gone numb? I must have some booze. I DEMAND TO HAVE SOME BOOZE!
[Withnail grabs lighter fluid]
I: I wouldn’t drink that if I was you.
Withnail: Why not?
I: Because I don’t advise it. Even the wankers on the site wouldn’t drink that, it’s worse than meths.
Withnail: Nonsense. This is a far superior drink to meths. The wankers don’t drink it because they can’t afford it.
[Drinks the lighter fluid]
Withnail: Ah. Ah. Have you got anymore?
[Marwood shakes his head no]
Withnail: Liar, what’s in your toolbox?
I: No we have nothing. Sit down!
Withnail: Liar, you’ve got antifreeze.
I: You bloody fool. You should never mix your drinks!
[Withnail laughs hysterically, collapses to the floor, and vomits]
Withnail (Richard E. Grant), I / Marwood (Paul McGann), Withnail and I (1987), written by Bruce Robinson
The Daily Dialogue theme for the week is drunken / stoned banter suggested by The Unknown Lyricist. Withnail and I suggested by Crocomonkeyduck.
Trivia: Originally written by Bruce Robinson as a novel. Its conclusion is quite different from the film’s: after his soliloquy in the rain at the park, Withnail returns to the flat he shared with Marwood, loads the rifle he took from Monty’s country home, pours some wine (also taken from Monty) down its barrel, then puts the muzzle to his lips and drinks. He then pulls the trigger on the gun, killing himself.
