Daily Dialogue — January 22, 2011
Slartibartfast: Perhaps I’m old and tired, but I think that the chances of finding out what’s actually going on are so absurdly remote that the only thing to do is to say, “Hang the sense of it,” and keep yourself busy. I’d much rather be happy than right any day.
Arthur Dent: And are you?
Slartibartfast: Ah, no.
[laughs, snorts]
Slartibartfast: Well, that’s where it all falls down, of course.
— Slartibartfast (Bill Nighy), Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), screenplay by Douglas Adams and Karey Kirkpatrick, based on Adams’ novels
The Daily Dialogue theme for the week is philosophy of life suggested by Martin_B. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was suggested by gibbousmoon.
Trivia: This is the ninth version of the “Hitchhiker’s Guide”. It has previously appeared as a radio series, two record albums, novels, a television series (“The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy” (1981)), a computer game, a stage show, a comic book, a video game (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1984)) and a towel. (The game version is not, in fact, a video game, but was an Infocom “interactive fiction” {text only} game, plotted/scripted by Douglas Adams, programmed by Steve Meretsky, which has been available to play free on the BBC Radio 4 website since 2005.)
