Daily Dialogue theme for next week:

Daily Dialogue theme for next week:

Wow, lots of great suggestions this time around, probably enough to take us through summer. We’ll see when I post the schedule below. But the business at hand is next week and for that we go with a suggestion by churnage: Gallows Humor!

It’s a critical situation, life and death. And only as movies can do, a character makes a snappy, snarky remark to comment on the severity of the circumstances.

What are some memorable movie moments that feature gallows humor?

The usual drill:

* Copy/paste dialogue from IMDB Quotes or some other transcript source.

* Copy/paste the URL of an accompanying video from MovieClips or YouTube.

I’d also like to ask you to think about why the dialogue is notable. Is there anything about the dialogue which provides some takeaway re screenwriting.

Schedule [including the person who suggested each theme]:

July 9-July 15: Meet-Cute [robfrappier]

July 16-July 22: Departure [MatchesMalone]

July 23-July 29: Side Character [Teddy Pasternak]

July 30-August 5: Famous Last Words [Vic Tional]

August 6-August 12: Subtext [lizswan]

August 13-August 19: Drug Deal [Jonathan Webb]

August 20-August 26: Smooth Talking [David Proenza]

August 27-September 2: Comic Set Piece [Shaula Evans]

September 3-September 9: Woody Allen [Sean Z P Harris]

September 10-September 16: Riffing [churnage]

September 17-September 23: Phone Call Revelation [Debbie Moon]

Wow! Takes us all the way into mid-September! Good work, everyone!

Bit of GITS trivia: I’ve been doing Daily Dialogue every day since Day 1. Do you know what inspired me? First I though it would be nice for people to wake up, click on GITS in the morning, and get a nice little taste of creativity to start the day. Second I had a personal challenge: To post dialogue each day from a different movie I had seen. Never repeat myself. Somewhere along the line, probably a suggestion from a GITS reader, the idea of a weekly theme came up. Over time it evolved into something I opened up to readers. Now it’s become this groovy, participatory event.

This feature has emerged not only as a nice bit of entertainment, but has become over time a great learning tool as well, especially as we dig down into the nuts and bolts of the dialogue.

Today marks the 1508th consecutive day we have featured a Daily Dialogue. Congratulations to all you Daily Dialogue enthusiasts for helping to keep the streak alive! Onward and upward!
