Daily Dialogue theme for next week?

For Day 3 of the “40 Days of Screenplays” challenge, the featured script was Some Like It Hot. And as part of the discussion, we hit on the final line of dialogue in the movie:

Finally there’s this movie trivia:

The now-famous closing line, “Nobody’s perfect,” was actually never intended to make the final film. It was apparently to be replaced by the writers once they thought of something they liked better. Furthermore, both I.A.L. Diamond and Billy Wilder credit the other for the genesis of the line.

It’s funny that Wilder & Diamond didn’t particularly care for the line because it was voted the #48 movie quote of all time by the American Film Institute. Later on in the “40 Days” challenge, we’ll read another great Wilder & Diamond script The Apartment which also has a memorable final line: “Shut up and deal.”

Takeaway? Don’t forget to spend time on the last line of your script. As important as P. 1 is — and it is, indeed, important — the last page can provide just the right coda to the story.
