“Everything is a Remix” — Part 2 (Movies)
So last August, I posted this:
This is absolutely worth watching, not only for music lovers, but also per Hollywood’s long history of recycling plots and its current obsession with remakes, sequels, and taking pre-branded brands (e.g., Battleship, Sherlock Holmes) and making ‘new’ entertainment.
Everything has been done before. Generating ‘fresh’ story concepts to write is a matter of the right mix of the right preexisting elements at the right time.
“Everything is a Remix” by Kirby is going to be a 4-part series. You can go here to learn more. While you’re there, contribute a few coins to support this very cool series.
Kirby is back with Part 2 which focuses on movies:
A factoid from the video: From last 10 years, of the top 100 movies, 74 were sequels, remakes, and adaptations. Now you know why Hollywood does so many pre-branded brands: Because they make money.
But more importantly is a point Kirby makes in the video: Creation requires influence. As storytellers, we build on the stories which have come before us.
I definitely recommend you watch this latest installment of “Everything is a Remix.” It touches on some of the key aspects of what we teach at Screenwriting Master Class in the Core I: Structure and Concept class.
Thanks to Atlanta for the link to Part 2.
UPDATE: Thanks to The Bitter Script Reader for this link:
I may be the only person in the universe who has yet to see this video, but having played music professionally for 7 years, it’s true: you can write just about any song you want with just four chords.
