“Four Franchises at a Crossroads”

The LA Times “Hero Complex” blog has run an interesting 4-part series last week:

This week we’re taking a look at four major trilogies from this decade that are looking to add a fourth film despite substantial challenges — not least among those challenges the skepticism of moviegoers who may wonder whether some of these Hollywood vehicles are running on empty. You can find the other three installments of the series right here.

The four film franchises in question

Pirates of the Caribbean

Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit

Spider-Man

X-Men

So I’ll ask the same question Hero Complex poses: Which franchise would be making the biggest mistake by continuing past the original trilogy?

The only one I’m really interested in seeing is The Hobbit. What about you?

UPDATE: The LA Times set up a poll for readers to vote on the four potential sequel projects. Thus far, The Hobbit is the winner. You can vote here.
