GITS Script Reading & Analysis

Okay, after a four month stretch last year in which we read and analyzed 14 movie scripts [which you can access here], it’s time to review what we did and how we can make it work better.

I want to make two observations followed by two suggestions, then open up the floor for your thoughts.

First it felt like interest ebbed and flowed depending upon the scripts involved. While we were trying to go after a broad range of genres and cross-genres, some of the selections were not terribly well-known or popular which I think hurt the enthusiasm of people to get involved.

Second a weekly series is too much to ask of busy people.

So my suggestions:

* Pick important, significant, well-known and popular movies: We can still vary genres, but if I’m going to spend my time on this, I’d rather go with something like The Shawshank Redemption than some fairly obscure genre piece.

* Reduce the schedule: I would propose we go with a monthly selection and see how that plays. If there is an outpouring of emotion to increase the opportunities, maybe we move to bi-weekly, but I don’t think there’s any good reason to do that unless there is a demonstrable indication on the part of GITS readers to commit to that.

How about you? What suggestions do you have? What was your experience with the series? I do think it’s important to keep up because reading scripts is an essential part of the craft of screenwriting. But we need to find an approach that lures in a sufficient number of participants. Otherwise it’s me, a couple of loyal readers, and tumbleweeds!
