Great Characters: Edward Scissorshands (“Edward Scissorhands”)
Today’s great character is suggested by Jason: Edward Scissorshands from the movie of the same name. The plot summary from IMDB:
An uncommonly gentle young man, who happens to have scissors for hands, falls in love with a beautiful teenage girl.
This misunderstood fairy tale protagonist faces an incredible antagonist: the entire suburban town that either prejudges him or tries to exploit him.
Edward’s child-like innocence and good intensions make him instantly sympathetic. His goal is also relatable — he just wants to date Winona Ryder like the rest of us did as kids in 1990.
I love how Tim Burton made Edward’s gothic appearance contrast completely with the “Easter Egg Pastel-colored” world he strived to assimilate into. Like Pinocchio mixed with Freddy Krueger.
VISUALLY unforgettable: literally white face, black leather and metal fingers.
You see, before he came down here, it never snowed. And afterwards, it did. If he weren’t up there now… I don’t think it would be snowing. Sometimes you can still catch me dancing in it.
