Great gift suggestion: Buy African school children desks to use
I’m reprising a holiday gift suggestion from this post last year:
In the spirit of the season, consider this:
Imagine you are a child in Malawi. You go to school. And you have to sit on the floor because there are no desks available.
Imagine how hard that is to sit for 6 hours a day, how much strain that puts on your body… when you’re in school to feed your mind.
There is a terrific program through UNICEF called K.I.N.D. — Kids In Need of Desks. For $48, you can pay for a desk that will seat 2 students. Plus the desks are built by craftsmen in Africa, so your donation also provides work and income to their local economy.
Imagine a classroom full of children. Now they’re all seated at desks. Now they can concentrate on what they’re being taught.
Imagine one of them has the soul of a writer… and goes on to write great stories.
You can find out more here. A wonderful gift to give in someone’s name this holiday season.
They continue to run the program this year and here is an update from Lawrence O’Donnell on his MSNBC show “The Last Word”:
To make a donation, you may do so here.
