“I went to grad school for creative writing and one week, we had a seminar and John Irving came in, the novelist and screenwriter. I remember he told us he never begins a novel until he knows the very last line. We do the exact opposite. We don’t want to know where a screenplay is going… It’s kind of a crapshoot way of writing [but] I can’t sit at the beginning of a script and see every way it’s going to go. We don’t want to do that. We work out a first act and that’s all we work out. And then we get together and we say, let’s see where this things wants to go.”
