“My primary way into a story is the characters. That’s who I identify with. I’ve had great relationships with directors, and I’ve had more difficult relationships with directors. Executives… I frequently have lots of trouble with. I have never really had trouble with the actors. It’s like we’re the two people — I said to Meg Ryan on the film we did together — we’re the only two people that ever have to be Alice Green. That have to co-inhabit that person, that individual and that’s the part of it I love the most. And so maybe part of what it’s about is, if that’s your way in, if you’re auto-writing and the character is you.”
