Interesting news re film distribution

We’ve had what could be the front edge of a trend toward movie studios willing, even eager to dip their toes into adult dramas again after the success of The King’s Speech, The Social Network, The Fighter, True Grit, and The Black Swan. Now maybe some more good news. Per TheWrap:

The company represents a new step in the evolution of distribution. As the number of distributors has dwindled, the exhibitors are taking matters into their own hands.

AMC and Regal see an opportunity to extend traditional film distribution as it has been left untended by the major studios. Regal is a huge chain with 6,000 theaters; AMC , the second-largest chain in the country, has more than 5,000 theaters in its network.

This announcement comes on the heels of another one re movie distribution. Per NYT:

Entering its ninth year, the Tribeca Film Festival is set to become associated with a new venture to distribute films digitally and in theaters under the Tribeca name. It is also embarking on another initiative to make some offerings available online to the paying public at the same time that they are screening at the festival.

The dual strategy, disclosed by Tribeca executives this week, puts this Manhattan-based festival and its corporate parent, Tribeca Enterprises, in the thick of a fight to revive the faltering independent film world with new distribution schemes.

They are talking about distributing up to 24 indie movies a year.

A bit of good news to usher in the weekend!
