Interview: Seth Rogen & Pineapple Express

Interview: Seth Rogen & Pineapple Express

If you’ve seen Knocked Up (2007), you’re familiar with Seth Rogen as an actor. But he is also a writer working on TV shows including “Undeclared” and “Da Ali G Show”, and movies including Superbad (2007) and Drillbit Taylor (2008). Seth co-wrote and co-stars in the upcoming stoner comedy Pineapple Express, which opens Friday, August 8th and he gave this interview to the folks at FirstShowing.net. In it, he talks about the inspiration for the movie:

“So we thought, wouldn’t it be nice if there was a really good weed movie and wouldn’t it be cool if there was a really action-packed weed movie, and we kind of just went from there.”

By the sound of it, Rogen and company took a Christopher Guest approach to the scripting process, creating the plot structure, but building in improvisation per each scene:

“We wrote the script and it’s structurally very similar to how the movie is — they go here, they go there, but what we say was kind of always up for grabs. We always just want to have it seem as natural as possible and we don’t pretend that we can write exactly how people speak to one another at all times. We just love to have people kind of do what they want.”

How much fun is that? Stoner action movie. Lots of improvisation. And smoking pot on the set!

Rogen is also attached to the new Green Hornet project, both as writer and actor. And as noted previously here, Rogen recently sold the pitch “Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse.” Here’s the trailer for Pineapple Express:
