“It’s Kind of a Funny Story”: Homage to John Hughes?

I saw the trailer for It’s Kind of a Funny Story this weekend. Looks great. Per the NYT:

The spirit of John Hughes seems to be making a resurgence this fall. Last week, the Film Society of Lincoln Center paid its respects to the director, who died last year, with a 25th-Anniversary screening of his teen comedy “The Breakfast Club.” Now, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the filmmakers behind the dramas “Half Nelson” and “Sugar,” make their third directorial outing with a comedy inspired in part by Mr. Hughes’s work. “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” which opens October 8, is based on the young adult novel by Ned Vizzini and, much in the Hughesian tradition, features a teenage protagonist (Keir Gilchrist). Mr. Fleck and Ms. Boden discussed Mr. Hughes’s impact in an interview for Arts & Leisure. While they didn’t aim to copy the director’s style, they did make a direct homage to “The Breakfast Club” in one scene.

Here’s the movie’s trailer:

The movie opens October 8.
