Music videos inspired by movies?
An interesting email from GITS reader Elizabeth Ozemebhoya:
I was thinking about music videos and how most of them don’t rely on dialogue to tell a story, something that is essential in screenwriting. Recently, Movieline featured the 10 Greatest Music Videos Based on Movies. It would be interested to go a step further and highlight any music video that uses images to tell a compelling story:
Other great storytelling videos not included on the list:
Don Henley’s Boys of Summer: According to Wikipedia, the video, directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino is French New Wave-influenced. Shot in black-and-white, it shows the main character of the song at three different stages of life (as a young boy, a young adult and middle-aged), in each case reminiscing about the past relationship. The cutaways of the “boys” jumping in the air appear to have been influenced by the 1938 film Olympia. Interspersed with these scenes are segments of Henley miming the words of the song while driving in a convertible. At its conclusion, the video uses the post-modern conceit of exposing its own workings, as with a wry expression Henley drives the car away from a rear projection screen.
Til Tuesday’s Voices Carry: Great scene at 3:11 when front-woman Aimee Mann realizes her Wall Street boyfriend will never accept her, no matter how much she tries to please him. She starts to sing the chorus while everyone watches. This video cheats as there are one or two spoken words of dialogue, but besides that, it’s the great images that tell the story of this abusive relationship.

Aerosmith’s Janie’s Got A Gun: Noir-inspired film directed by David Fincher.

Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance: A woman is kidnapped, paraded and then sold as a sex slave to a member of the Russian mafia. The video ends with her casually smoking a cigarette next to his skeleton. Bad Romance indeed.
