Opening this weekend: “Animal Kingdom”

I’ve gotten a few emails from GITS readers asking me to promote the movie Animal Kingdom. Here’s one comment from Elizabeth:

David Michod’s “Animal Kingdom” is coming out this Friday in NYC and LA and I would like it if you advertised it to the readers. I saw it in an advanced screening in June and thought it was the best movie I saw all year. For a movie about sociopathic criminals, there was little violence, yet the movie is tense throughout. Great example about how to grip the audience with tension and suspense.

Summary: Tells the story of seventeen year-old J (Josh) as he navigates his survival amongst an explosive criminal family and the detective who thinks he can save him.

Set in the underground of Melbourne, Australia, David Michôd’s “Animal Kingdom” received considerable approval at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prize in the festival’s World Narrative Competition. Sony Pictures Classics picked up the film shortly thereafter, and is releasing the film Friday with the distributor hoping that “Kingdom” will become a late summer hit on the specialty circuit. Generally, critics should be helpful in making that a potential reality.
