Oscar noms!
Officially announced. It’s the first year of the ‘extended’ nominations in the Best Picture category, now with 10 nominated pics, so that’s where a lot of attention will go. But in all honesty — and yes, I know I’m biased — the most interesting set of nominations, I think, are Best Original Screenplay. Here are the Oscar nominations:

Only 2 shared nominations. I’m guessing that’s a first. Of course, we covered — here — why the WGA, by its own bylaws, couldn’t nominate Tarantino and the Pixar dudes. And the Academy, being a ‘serious’ group, could be expected to swap out The Messenger instead of The Hangover in their continuing slap-in-the-face approach to comedies.
My guess is The Hurt Locker takes both the WGA and Oscar awards, but we could have split winners. I’ll stick with Up in the Air as the Best Adapted Screenplay winner.

I am happy to see Up nominated. It’s a wonderfully crafted story. Also that District 9 got a nomination for Best Picture which I doubt would have happened if they had stuck with the 5 movie limit (probably Precious would have fallen by the wayside, too).
