Popcorn Fiction: “At Great Risk to My Person” (Phil Hay)

I am thrilled to give you a new short story this morning from screenwriter Phil Hay. “At Great Risk to My Person” centers on a spaceship commander who explains his side of the story as his ship prepares for war. Hay’s wicked sense of humor shines through every paragraph; I think you’re going to really enjoy this one, even if you aren’t a sci-fi fan. Hay, along with his screenwriting partner, Matt Manfredi, wrote the movies crazy/beautiful, Aeon Flux, Clash of the Titans… and have written about four other movies that are either in production or in prep. This one’s different than anything else we’ve run, so check it out!

An announcement before I begin this week’s letters: we’re going to take a break on Popcorn Fiction for a few weeks while I do some traveling. This’ll give you a chance to read some of the stories in our archives you might have skipped. Also, it looks more and more like I’m going to be making an announcement soon about some big changes here at the site. Nothing is set in stone, but it looks like Popcorn Fiction may partner with another site to expand our readership and get the authors who publish here a much larger audience. I just have to make sure our site keeps its focus on the stories and doesn’t morph into something different and the quality here stays high. Anyway, that’s just a tiny bit of insider information to whet your whistle. As far as opening the site up to general submissions, I still plan to do that either the end of this month or for a week during November…so look for the submit button soon. Okay, that’s it…on to the letters.

Sounds interesting! What I love about a site like PopcornFiction is not only that it offers up great stories every week and not only that it highlights screenwriter, but that Haas is aggregating original content in an age where content is king. He had an idea, followed his bliss, and took a leap into the web… and now it looks like the site is going to gain even more traction.
