Popcorn Fiction: “The Last American” by Eric Heisserer

Screenwriter-novelist Derek Haas who runs the terrific genre writing site Popcorn Fiction is back with another short story:

Eric Heisserer’s last Popcorn Fiction story “Hours” was extremely popular around here. If you haven’t read that one, please go back into the archives and check it out. It’s a gut-wrenching thriller. Eric is directing an adaptation of that story this Fall…more details on that to follow soon.

He’s back now with quite a different tale. A teen-age girl does whatever it takes to survive an alien occupation in “The Last American.” It’s not a pretty story, and Heisserer doesn’t flinch from taking it to a dark — but somehow hopeful — place. I’m always keen to publish stories that surprise me, and this is no exception. Let me know what you think!
