Producer David Brown remembered by screenwriter Tom Benedek
On February 1, 2010, famed Hollywood movie producer David Brown died at his home in Manhattan. He was 93.
Brown’s producing credits are numerous including Jaws (1975), The Verdict (1982), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), The Player (1992), A Few Good Men (1992), Angela’s Ashes (1999), and Chocolat (2000).
In 1990, he along with longtime producing partner Richard Zanuck were given the prestigious Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Science for their achievements as producers.
One of the movies Brown produced was Cocoon (1985). I asked its screenwriter and my longtime friend Tom Benedek if he would write something about his experience working with David Brown. He agreed. Here are Tom’s reflections about David Brown:
Can you imagine the movie Cocoon with an evil drug company as the story’s antagonist? Brown’s solid creative instincts are very much evident in that single piece of advice as it helped to steer Tom down a path that led to even deeper layers of discovery about all the movie’s wonderful characters.
I’d like to thank Tom for taking the time to remember one of Hollywood’s greatest producers David Brown. Hopefully I can get Tom to drop by GITS with a post or two down the road.
