Question: Do you make decisions about going to a theater to see a movie based upon the type of movie it is?
The other day, we had an interesting discussion about the downturn in ticket sales to movie theaters. This question occurred to me as a follow-up:
Do you make decisions about going out to see a movie — as opposed to seeing it online, at home, DVD, etc — based upon the type of movie it is?
For example, if it’s a big special effects movie, I am hugely motivated to go to an actual movie theater so I can experience the film’s scope. Comedies? Unless it’s with an actor I really like, has a great high concept, or a script I’ve read and am excited to watch on screen, I can wait on those until they become available for home viewing. Thrillers? If the critical reaction is strong, I’ll see it in a theater. If not, I wait. But generally if the movie has big sights and sounds, I want to experience that in a kick-ass theater.
The two caveats are mainstream adult dramas and indie films. I see them in theaters no matter, my humble attempt to support them in the marketplace.
