Rating the Star Wars movies

What’s a college student to do when given the Thanksgiving respite from all their academic work? Why spend an entire day screening all 6 Star Wars movies back-to-back. That is precisely what my oldest son Will did yesterday with one of his college friends. After his eyes had stopped bleeding from the experience, I asked Will how he rated the six movies. From best to worst, this is how he ranks them:

Star Wars: Episode 5 — The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars: Episode 4 — A New Hope

Star Wars: Episode 3 — Revenge of the Sith

Star Wars: Episode 6 — Return of the Jedi

Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace

Star Wars: Episode 2 — Attack of the Clones

The thing that surprises me most about this order is the very concept that any of the movies could be worse than The Phantom Menace [read: the introduction of Jar Jar Binks], but Will reminded me that Hayden Christensen’s performance in SW2 is so bad, it trumps every other consideration.
