There is no ‘average’ price tag for a spec script sale. The term million dollar spec script may be disseminated widely online, but that represents the very high-end of spec sales. And it’s a damn shame nobody has taken the time and effort to put together a definitive list of spec script sales from… say… 1991… so we could get some idea of how many million dollar spec scripts have sold.

For example in 2011, there were 5 specs that sold which were a reported seven figure deals. In 2010, I believe just 2.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is the WGA minimum price for an original screenplay which is currently $119,954.

Those are the extremes in terms of range. If I had to guess at an average price of a spec script sale, I would say in the $300–500K range.

Not bad work… if you have the wherewithal to write a great script.
