Screenwriting 101: Velina Hasu Houston

“As an artist, I feel it is important to take what I have learned and feed my energies back into new writers, to encourage their creative vision and help them in their journeys from idea to script. Of course, I have been fortunate to mentor screenwriting students who represent some of the finest creative minds from around the world because the UCLA program attracts large numbers of applicants, and those who are admitted are the best of the best, but the chief attraction of teaching is to be able to give of my gifts to others. Pointedly, screenwriters are not taught per se, but mentored. They can be taught craft, but they must bring their innate talents to the table. Their vision and the determination necessary to bring that vision to fruition must be extraordinary and driven by the utmost passion. The vigorous desire to make something happen — against the tremendous odds of the arts and entertainment industry — is mandatory for writers.”
