Spec Script Sale: “Dear Satan”

Fox buys comedy spec script “Dear Satan” from writer Dan Ewen. From Variety:

Story follows a 7-year-old girl who accidentally misspells “Santa” and instead invites Satan to bring her a toy for Christmas. The inspiration for the script came from the writer’s babysitting experience when a child in his care switched a couple of letters in Santa’s name on his yearly note to the North Pole.

“There was this cute little card, covered in candy canes and glitter,” Ewen said. “I fell in love with the idea of this note mistakenly being delivered to the Prince of Darkness and the fiery wackiness that would ensue.”

This is one of those story concepts that when you read it for the first time, that as a screenwriter you are filled with a multitude of emotions: Amazement that this idea, which has been sitting there in plain view for decades, is something you didn’t conjure up yourself. Jealousy that some other writer had the vision to see what you couldn’t see. And admiration for what is clearly a great comedy high-concept.

Ewen is repped by APA and manager Christopher Pratt.

By my count, this is the 44th spec script sale in 2012.

There were 36 spec sales by this time last year.

The 44th spec script didn’t sell in 2011 until June 14th.

Spec sales are up 22% year-to-date compared to 2011.
