Spec Script Sale: “He’s F***ing Perfect”
Fox 2000 acquires comedy spec “He’s F***ing Perfect” from “newbie” writer Lauryn Kahn. From THR:
He’s F***ing Perfect is the story of one woman who regularly Facebook-stalks the men her friends are dating, acting as a vetting device for them to weed out losers. Things take a turn when she gets a friend to dump her new guy in order for the woman to steal the man for herself, because in her search she found him to be “f***ing perfect.”
A few things:
* “Kahn embodies the out-of-nowhere, rags-to-riches dream: She has for the past several years acted as McKay¹s assistant at Gary Sanchez. The job allowed her to work on several shorts (which she wrote and directed), and she was able to hone her comedic touch.” Once again the inherent value of landing an assistant’s gig. Hugely competitive and justifiably so because it puts you in the game. Little surprise McKay and Farrell are producing this project.
* “The deal is said to be in the $1 million range and, seeing as the script just hit studios yesterday, shows that with the right material, the spec market still has the occasional throbbing pulse despite years of decline.” I don’t know how long the meme “spec script market is dead” will stick around because as we have seen here at GITS, tracking all the spec script sales, 2011 is turning out to be a banner year. Now that’s not to say 2012 won’t suck, but as I was noting last night on Twitter, spec sales are up across the board — from major studios like Warner Bros. which has bought 13 spec scripts this year, to mini-majors and independents. If sales continue like this, 2011 will top the last best sales year which was 2008 [see below].
By my count, this is the 81st spec script to sell in 2011.
Only 55 spec scripts sold in 2010.
Only 68 spec script sold in 2009.
87 spec scripts sold in 2008.
Spec script sales are up 76% year-to-date compared to last year.
