Spec Script Sale: “Tammy”

New Line acquires comedy spec “Tammy” from writer-actress Melissa McCarthy. From THR:

The project centers on an overweight woman who is laid off from her job at Hardee’s, discovers her husband is having an affair, and decides to go on a road trip with her alcoholic, foul-mouthed, diabetic grandmother. The script is based on a character created by McCarthy.

Road picture. R-rated Driving Miss Daisy. And mostly McCarthy who is hot right now.

McCarthy is repped by CAA.

By my count, Tammy is the 78th spec script to sell in 2011.

Only 55 sold in 2010.

Only 68 sold in 2009.

Spec script sales are up 75% year-to-date over last year.
