Spec Script Sale: “The Duff”

CBS Films acquires teen comedy spec script “The Duff” from writer Josh Cagan. From The Wrap:

Josh Cagan (“Bandslam”) adapted the comedy novel, which is set in high school and has narrative elements similar to “Easy A” and “Mean Girls.”
In the book, a slightly awkward teen girl becomes tired of being the “DUFF” — i.e. the designated ugly fat friend — to her two better looking BFFs. She then sets out to re-invent herself for her senior year.

The Ugly Duckling. Metamorphosis. Wish fulfillment. Teens. Smells like a hit to me.

Cagan is repped by WME and H2F Entertainment.

By my count, this is the 94th spec script sale in 2011.

In 2010, only 55 spec scripts sold.

In 2009, only 68 spec scripts sold.

Spec sales are up 84% year-to-date compared to last year.
