Spec Script Sale: “The Mountain”

Twentieth Century Fox preemptively acquires horror spec The Mountain from writer Helen Childress. From here:

The project is a horror story based on characters from Summer, the novel by Edith Wharton. Set in the early 1900s, “The Mountain” revolves around a young woman who struggles to confront her destiny after stumbling upon a mysterious object that forces her to examine the secrets of her past. It’s a sophisticated horror premise in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby.

Ben Stiller attached to direct.

Childress is repped by Original Artists.

By my count, this is the 82nd spec script to sell in 2011.

Only 55 spec scripts sold in 2010.

Only 68 spec script sold in 2009.

87 spec scripts sold in 2008.

Spec script sales are up 78% year-to-date compared to last year.
