Spec script sale: “The Originals”
Hollywood Reporter has this item:
Universal and Imagine have picked up “The Originals,” a drama written by Bryce Dallas Howard and writing partner Dane Charbeneau that could serve as a directing vehicle for her father, Ron Howard.
Now before you punch your computer monitor and cry out, “Why wasn’t I born the son or daughter of Ron Howard?!?! How easy must that deal have been!!!”, check out the story’s premise:
“Originals” is an ensemble film about a group of twentysomethings who reconvene for a weekend in New York after learning that the teacher who shaped their childhoods has fallen into a mysterious coma.
Great concept. Sounds like The Big Chill meets Mr. Holland’s Opus.
Moreover this is the second script Bryce has written, following a short film Orchids (2006) that she directed and co-wrote with Dane Charbeneau, who also co-wrote “The Originals.”
So as much as you may want to chalk up this sale to nepotism, it appears that it just might be a really good script.
